THE BURNHAM TROPHY

The Young Theatre (at Beaconsfield) performed it’s first original one-act play festival in 1972 (Stage Four). The competition was resurrected in 1986 and later became The Burnham Trophy. The group is split into three teams who must write, design, administrate and perform a 30 minute play.

The play is to be based on a word or phrase chosen by the committee. This year it is “The Seven Deadly Sins”.

Each play is adjudicated at each performance and the audience invited to vote on their favourite. The adjudicator and audience scores are combined and the winner is announced on the last night.

The Burnham Trophy was named after, and presented by, the group’s first President, Lady Anne Burnham.

The winning play is usually edited by an experienced writer and then presented at the following season’s local one-act play festivals.

Previous themes have included:

Voices (1986)

Time (1987)

Images (1988)

Rebels (1990)

Echoes (1991)

Moment of Truth (1994)

Chaos Theory (1997)

Destiny (1999)

Reflections (2001)

Isolation (2005)

The most successful festival entry from The Burnham Trophy was “Power Games” by Jamie Ivens which won 7 awards in 2006.
