"As innocent as the child unborn" is a common enough phrase, but the two children in The Innocents by William Archibald are well and truly born.
In The Young Theatre's production [L to R] Tracy Wilde and Robert Glenister play the two children with Rowena Gura as Mrs. Grosse the housekeeper and Philippa Kitchen as the governess.
Young Theatre
aims high
At last they made it, after two years of problems and frustrations … this complex play requires such subtlety in interpretation and playing … that it is often avoided by adult groups …
this young, keen and committed group showed temerity indeed in tackling the job … the director Kay Koré had taken much care in planning and rehearsing … and was well blessed with her choice of players.
Rowena Gura (15) gave a strong character study, in depth, of Mrs. Grose the housekeeper … an astonishing mature firm performance by a young girl, in excellent dialect …
As Miles, young Robert Glenister (12) gave a pleasingly firm and audible performance particularly good in his final scene … As Flora, Tracy Wilde (13) made a very good attempt [if] looking perhaps
a little too old for ten years. As Miss Giddens, the governess, Philippa Kitchen (16) brought grace and style, fear and contemplation to a sensitive reading.
The setting of the mid-19th century country house was truly evocative in scenery and stage decoration … [and] costumes were most acceptable.
